[GOLD RUSH]. Receipt for purchase of passage to Panama from San Francisco. 4 January 1850.

"San Francisco January 4 1850." 1p, approx. 8 1/4 x 4 in. (creasing, toning, small losses, adhered to 9 1/2 x 6 in. paper).

Reads in full: "Received from Mr. Samuel K. Winn [sp?]. One hundred fifty Dollars for a cabin Passage in the Bark 'Algomi' [sp?] hence to Panama / $150 / Berth No 5." Issued by "Forbes, Boyd, & Beaudry, Agents."

A receipt issued during the early years of the California Gold Rush by a firm which, according to "The Pacific News" of 20 December 1849, was located "over [the] Harbor Master's office" in San Francisco.
