In the mid to late 19th century, magazine fed rifles became preferred for military use and many Martini rifles were converted from their original configuration to .22 caliber. They were then used in civilian marksmanship type programs in Britain called "rifle clubs." Following several close invasion scares, volunteer rifle units were established, and senior military officers stressed the importance of these rifle clubs to help train and familiarize British men with firearms as most had no prior knowledge or experience.
