Lot Description
Bird's Eye View of Detroit Factory Parke Davis & Co. Lithograph

Lithographic print, 32.35 x 18 in. (sight), framed to 36.5 x 22.375 in., after a painting by Gari Melchers (American, 1860-1932) of the Parke, Davis and Company Complex on the Detroit riverfront, viewed from an elevated perspective. A small train runs parallel to the complex, while pedestrians and horse-drawn wagons and buggies dot the foreground. Several boats are also visible in the background, a testament to Detroit's status as a thriving hub of industry during the nineteenth century. The Parke, Davis and Company Pharmaceutical Plant moved to the Detroit Riverfront in the 1870s. Among the nation’s more successful pharmaceutical firms, it included the first pharmaceutical research laboratory building to be constructed in the United States.
