Lot 274
Mounted CDV of Shoshone Chief Washakie seated in a chair, with a hat resting on his left knee, originally photographed by Savage and Ottinger, ca 1865. He wears prominent earrings and a large medallion around his neck. Identified on paper mount, with a pencil inscription reading, "The large medal worn by him / was given by the President of US the / only person from whom he would / receive a present. Washkie [sic] was a / grand fine fellow."
Washakie (ca 1804-1900) was a lifelong friend to settlers of the American West, assisting them with travel through his treacherous homeland terrain. In 1876, he joined forces with the military as both a scout and warrior, serving under General George Crook to help push Crazy Horse into the Powder River Country. Praised by Presidents Grant and Arthur, Chief Washakie was buried with full military honors.
