Lot Description
Two Japanese and Korean Lacquer Writing Boxes
18th-19th Century
the first a Japanese gold, black, red and dark brown lacquer suzuribako, the cover decorated with a scholar with a horse next to a gate underneath pine trees, the reverse with two seated monkeys, containing a rectangular trey decorated with a mountain, a pen case, a gilt highlighted inkstone and a silver water dropper; the second a Korean mother-of-pearl inlaid red and black lacquer example, the cover decorated with a shaped panels enclosing a pair of phoenix flanking a floral blossom, further enclosed by a keyfret band, comtaining one miniature basin-form water dropper and two small rectangular compartments.
Length of larger 11 x width 7 in., 27.94 x 17.78 cm.
