Lot Description

An Indo-Persian Shishpar (Flanged Mace)
18th Century

28" overall. Iron shishpar mace with seven 5" flanged blades and chiseled cow's hoof cuts to edges. Mace head is fixed to a 22" haft and talwar-style hilt with swept knuckle guard and flower pommel. Haft is engraved with simple chevrons and bands.

It is believed that Persians introduced the flanged "shishpar" mace to Southern Asia sometime during the Mughal-era (1526-1858). The term shishpar is derived from an Indo-Iranian word used to describe sharp edged mountains in the Hindu Kush.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
