Lot Description
PYNCHON, Thomas (b. 1937). Gravity’s Rainbow. New York: The Viking Press, 1973.
8vo. Original orange cloth, top edge stained orange; dust jacket (price-clipped, spine gently faded, small stain to lower corner of rear flap fold, flap also with vertical crease).
FIRST EDITION, in FIRST ISSUE DUST JACKET with publisher’s date code of 0273 on lower front flap, and ISBN printed in white on rear cover. Gravity’s Rainbow won the National Book Award in 1974, with Pynchon famously refusing to acknowledge the award and instead sending the comedian “Professor” Irwin Corey in his stead; adding to the surrealism of the moment, a streaker ran across the stage during Corey’s acceptance speech.
