Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Quarter plate ambrotype of a tough-looking Confederate soldier.
Quarter plate ambrotype seated portrait of a southern private wearing a state-issue 9-button roundabout with matching dark colored collar and cuffs trimmed with two small brass buttons. His wide-brimmed slouch hat is worn casually, slightly tipped back. His well-groomed mustache and goatee add to his rugged charm.
Housed in a pressed paper case.
A 7-button version of the jacket worn by the subject is known to have been worn by Co. K, 39th Alabama Infantry (Osprey, The Confederate Army (2), p.15). Early Arkansas volunteers also wore similar dark faced uniforms, while the State of Tennessee regulations (May 1861) prescribed a related coat.
