Seven Years in Tibet covers the interim period between Harrer's escape from a British internment camp in 1944 to the Battle of Chambo nearly seven years later. The book was first published in 1953, just after Tibet fell to the Chinese Communist Party, and was hailed for having "provided the world with a final glimpse of life in an independent Tibetan state prior to the Chinese invasion."
