FIRST EDITION of this account by a member of the Hampden Mining Company of his trip to Los Angeles via Mexico in late 1849. Clarke traveled to the mines of California from Camargo, Mexico through Chihuahua and Sonora to the Gila River in Arizona (then the U.S.-Mexican boundary), arriving at Los Angeles on July 9.
