Lot Description
[WORLD WAR II]. A collection of 14 miscellaneous objects relating to Allied Powers, including:
UNITED NATIONS. War Atlas. [New York], Consolidated Book Publishers, Inc., 1942. Folio, 18pp colored maps, others mostly b-&-w, with occasional red lines and arrows marking troop movements. Soft covers. Front cover with Gen. Douglas MacArthur.
Anon. Soviet Women in the War against Hitlerism. Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1942. With stamp of American Russian Institute on tp. 12mo, soft cover, 76pp. Translated to English.
Russian note paper, six (6) pcs., with one side of the outer part of the note having caricatures of Nazis, the opposite side with lines for address and lined inside for the note itself. (some browning, appears to have been a liquid spill)
Broken cane, escutcheon. Silver knob with “G. ?? Cotton, U.S.N. Below the knob there are silver rings on the shaft, each with a destination visited or ship’s name – his record of service – St. Nicholas Church; U.S.S. Hancock (laid down in 1943); Mexico; Cuba; Haiti; Santo Domingo; Flag Cruiser Force; and Flag San Domingo. Overall 16-1/2”. Where it has broken, it has been sanded smooth – the cane becomes a swagger stick!
Trench art – empty brass shell (large caliber – 1” diameter, 5-1/4” tall) – top has been bent into a lip at the opening. The shell is covered with scenes of Egypt- camels, pyramids, the sphynx, and date palms. Bottom with “S.M.I. / 1/940 / P.G. in diamond / 20.” This seems to be from an Italian anti-tank gun, used mostly in North Africa. This is some of the best artwork we have seen.
Wall plaque with “Dec. 44 / Bastogne” on rim. Images of an American soldier and a German soldier, the German handing a surrender ultimatum to Gen. Anthony McAuliffe. McAuliffe is said to have replied “Nuts,” which is above the figures on the plaque. 5-1/2” diameter. This town was involved in the Battle of the Bulge near the end of WWII. Verso stamped “Made in Couvin Belgium.” Supposed to have been made of melted down artillery shells. They come in both round and octagonal versions.
Wood wall plaque with soldier’s portrait, “Pvt. Harold a. Guider, and around the perimeter “* Frankreich * Germany * Csechoslowakia * Bavaria * / 1945.”
3” tile with Soldier and MP and “506th MP Bn.”
Puzzle that appears to be incomplete, “Put Hitler in the Dog House.” Bridgeport, CT: Zen, 1942
Wood cigarette case, with swivel lid, standing eagle on front and spaces for 10 cigarettes.
Two “Marine Band” Harmonicas, by M. Hohner, Germany. One has “No. 1896” and comes in a box with a photo of the U.S. Marine Band on the top. Harmonica is Key of A, 4” long. (Box with top corners broken, a few pieces missing), Second also in its box, marked “40 Reeds.” Key of C. This is a bit larger than the first, 4-5/8”.
Pennant, 10-1/2” wide, 26” long. With portrait of President Truman, “35th Division Reunion.”
Scarf or bandana, 28-1/2 x 30”. Seems to celebrate the end of the Sino-Japanese War. With “PAX” (Peace) and suppose the equivalent in Russian and Chinese. Portraits of Tchiang Kai-Chek and Madame Tchiang Kai-Chek, Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill. Surrounded by flags of the Allies.
