Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 14 sixth plate daguerreotypes of women with babies.
Lovely portrait of a beautiful, possibly mixed race woman wearing drop earrings, lace collar, and brooch, holding a chubby-cheeked baby in her lap. The woman's expression is rather serious, almost sullen. (Cover glass with diagonal crack to lower right, tarnishing along crack and to edges of plate, some dust particles and weeping spots between glass and plate; original seals.) Housed in a nearly separated pressed paper case (almost fully separated at spine, surface wear throughout). -- Enchanting portrait of an in-focus mother seated to the viewer's right, looking to the camera but with her body slightly angled toward her somewhat blurry baby, seated in a decorative chair to the viewer's left. (Tarnishing to edges, minor other imperfections, spotting to mat.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (split at spine, surface wear and discoloration) with velvet pad marked for "PINE & BELL'S, 394, RIVER ST., TROY, N.Y." -- Charming portrait of a mother with visible bags under her eyes, wearing a blue-tinted dress and gold-highlighted earrings, holding in her lap a baby wearing a pink-tinted dress and leaning her head against the mother's chest. (Significant tarnishing to edges, occasional spots; unsealed.) Housed in a half pressed paper case (surface wear). -- And 11 others. Conditions and housings vary. -- Together, 14 sixth plate daguerreotype portraits of women with babies.
