Lot Essay:
The present Lot is a study for the triptych, Apollon et les Muses, which Henri Martin completed in the Béziers Chambre de Commerce between 1935 and 1939. Martin executed many studies of the Sun god, especially in order to find the best way to suggest his modesty, either alone in the landscape, as it is the case here, or surrounded by the muses. The lyre held by Apollo in our painting was specially commissioned by Henri Martin to one of his relatives, and appears in many other compositions by the artist. It is now on view at the Galerie Pentcheff in Marseille.
