Lot Description
A Portuguese Rococo mahogany armchair, circa 1750
With carved and pierced crest-rail centered by shell, solid shaped splat, scrolled armrests with acanthus-carved uprights, molded serpentine seat-rail with shaped and carved apron, on cabriole legs with foliate-carved knees, ending in ball-and-claw feet, the legs connected by X-form stretcher, slip seat later upholstered in petit point depicting a falconer in a landscape.

H: 45 1/4 in. W: 29 in. D: 20 in.

Condition Report
with nicely polished surface, the wood grain exhibiting wonderful figuring; small repaired break to left-facing corner of crest-rail carving; repaired break to stile at left-facing armrest attachment; repaired breaks to armrest uprights at armrest attachments; repaired splits and patches to front left and right corners of seat rail; back legs both spliced and with later wood segments; front left-facing food with patched / replaced wood segment along front; rear stretcher attachments likely repaired, with later wood segments added underneath for support; with scattered occasional old worm holes and small abrasions or losses along edges commensurate with age and use; the rear corner blocks are replaced; slip seat is original with expected worm holes, and numbered "III" like the seat rail which is numbered "III"; upholstered in later needlework, which remains in good condition overall
