Lot Description
[MAP]. LAWSON, John (1678-1711). -- VISCHER, Ludwig Friedrich (1677-1720). Die Vornehmste Eigenthums Herren und Besitzer von Carolina. Hamburg, 1712.

Engraved map with hand-coloring. Matted and framed, visible area 381 x 305 mm, old folds (unexamined out of framed). The great seal of the Carolina colony appears above the title cartouche in the lower right and is followed by a list of the proprietors of Carolina: Lords Ashley, Colleton, Danson, Craven, Beaufort, and Carteret.

RARE GERMAN EDITION, reprinting Lawson's famous 1709 map, first published in the London edition, A New Voyage to Carolina. Lawson relied chiefly on the 1685 Thornton-Morden-Lea map but gives a more detailed configuration of the Outer Banks, Pimlico Sound, and the river system that drains into it. "Bath" is named for the first time on a printed map, which became North Carolina's first town and port of entry.

"Lawson reached Charles Town in August 1700, and soon thereafter began an expedition to the interior of the colony. After he had followed the Indian Trading Path to the site of Hillsborough, N.C., he turned eastward to the white settlements of the colony. In 1705 he was one of the persons who secured the incorporation of the town of Bath. He was made surveyor general of North Carolina in 1708; in 1709, while in London, he met the Swiss colonizer, Christopher de Graffenried. Lawson aided in the migration of 600 Palatines to New Bern, N.C. In September 1711, while on an exploring expedition, he was seized by the Tuscarora Indians, tortured, and killed, though his companion de Graffenried escaped" (Cummings, p. 202). Ibid 153; Howes L-155.
