Audubon's Barn Swallow, plate CLXXIII from his Birds of America (London, 1827-38). "Painting and plate depict a nest affixed to a board, with a female in the nest and the male on the edge of it. Audubon wrote that he used a nest he had removed from a barn in New Jersey as a model. It seems safe to deduce from this that he made the painting during the summer of 1829, when he was in New Jersey, or possibly in 1832, when he was painting there during a brief stay in the summer" (Low).
