London: The Grolier Society, 1903-06. In 14 volumes (comprising 13 text volumes and one volume of plates). Connoisseur Edition, #196/200 numbered copies on japon vellum. 8vo. Title-pages printed in red and in black. Profusely illustrated with over 1,200 plates, in-text and full-page, featuring several photogravures, many in color; many full-page plates with captioned tissue guards. Final plate volume illustrated with duplicates of plates found in text volumes. Three-quarter dark green morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, stamped in gilt, red morocco onlay on spine, boards and spines unevenly faded, joints and extremities rubbed, especially to Vol. XIII, corners of each volume worn, boards variously rubbed, foot of spine of Vol. X worn; top edges gilt; matching marbled endpapers; scattered light soiling to text.
Limited and profusely illustrated edition of Gaston Maspero's comprehensive history and culture of Egypt, the Nile River Valley, and the Middle East. Maspero's work, first published in French in 1895 as Histoire ancienne des peuples de l'Orient classique, is translated here into English in the first nine volumes. It is supplemented with S. Rappoport's three-volume History of Egypt from 330 B.C. to the Present Time as well as L.W. King and H.R. Hall's History of Egypt...in the Light of Recent Discovery. This set includes a 14th volume featuring duplicates of plates found in the preceding 13 volumes.
