Abbey, Travel 369; Blackmer 1097; Atabey 785

Handsome first edition of Luigi Mayer's views of Egypt, featuring fine illustrations of the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, scenes and views of Alexandria, Cairo, as well as depictions of Arabs, Mamelukes, and Bedouins. An important record of pre-Napoleonic Egypt, and the first of Mayer's work on the region. Mayer's illustrations were created in 1792 at the request of his employer, Sir Robert Ainslie, British ambassador to the Ottoman court, who asked him to accompany a group of Englishmen travelling between Constantinople and Egypt.
