Paris: Robert Stephanus, 1568-69. Two volumes in one. 16mo. (xvi), 494, (2, blank); 342, (2, blank), (40) pp. Illustrated with a printer's device on each title-page and verso of Aa8, as well as woodcut initials and head-pieces. Full 17th century crimson morocco, elaborately stamped in gilt with the royal arms of King Louis XIII of France on front and rear boards, clasps perished, boards and extremities rubbed and worn, upper and lower joints of each board split, wear along spine; all edges gilt; marbled paste-downs, free endpapers likely removed; ownership inscription, dated January 1, 1677/8, on front free endpaper: "Ex dono clarissima mei amici Johanis Tovey Civi Londini Jan. i. 1677/8 Jul. Gourney"; additional ownership signatures on verso of front blank, dated 1767 and 1911; scattered minor spotting to text; label on recto of rear blank. Darlow & Moule 4634
Small format Bible in Greek, bound with the gilt arms of French King Louis XIII. Printed by Robert Estienne II (1530-70), son of the great Robert Estienne (1503-59), and brother to printer Henri Estienne (1528/31-98). Educated in Hebrew, Estienne II opened his own print shop in Paris in 1556, and earned the title Typographus regius in 1563. This edition is a reprint of his father's 1549 printing.
