[Fine Bindings] [Weill, Lucie] Villon, Francoys. Le Grant Testament
Paris: Aux Depens de L'Artiste, 1948. First and limited edition, #31/45 numbered copies on Rives paper (from a total edition of 290). 4to. With numerous illustrations by "Schem" (Raoul Serres), and with an original signed pencil drawing by him at front, and with an additional suite of 18 plates at rear. Beautifully bound in full tan levant with decorative blue and green leaf-patterned onlay, lettered in gilt; all edges gilt; blue reverse calf dentelles and endleaves; by Lucie Weill; in drab paper-covered leather entry slip case.
A very fine copy of this erotically charged novel by Francois Villon, beautifully bound by French bookbinder Lucie Weill. Weill was a Parisian bookseller, gallery owner, and noted publisher. In the 1930s, she founded noted galleries in Paris which became an important center for modern art. During this time she also worked as a bookbinder, creating many fine pieces such as this.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
