First edition (without errata slip, and with ads dated 12/97). 8vo. xiv, (ii), 336, 32 (ads) pp. Illustrated with frontispiece portrait (with tissue guard) and six maps (two folding and in color). Publisher's light green cloth-covered boards, stamped in blind and in gilt, scattered very light wear and spotting; black endpapers; contemporary gift inscription at top of half-title, dated 1898; toning and light spotting to verso of free endpapers and half-title; some prelims unopened; gutter worn at p. 49; pp. 151-154 loose; armorial book-plate of the library of the Abbey of St. Mary of Consolation at Stanbrook, laid in at front. A very handsome and scarce first edition of Winston Churchill's first book. Of this first edition, close to 2,000 copies were published, with 1,600 bound in March 1898, 354 in June, and with the final 46 sets of sheets transferred for use in the Colonial Issue of the same year.
