A Carved White Jade Table Screen
LIKELY EARLY 20TH CENTURY
of rectangular form, worked to show a gourd to front and back with characters da ji ("great luck") and tian xi ("happiness from heaven"), set on a cloudy ground, incised on two sides each reading jing yi xiushen, jian yi yangde ("quietude promotes learning, frugality cultivates virtue") and jiao bu yi jiu, yan bu chong hua ("making new friends while not leaving out the old ones, do not speak flashy words with no substance"), mounted in a Zitan wood stand delicately carved with kuilong, a ruyi-head motif and lappet leaves.
