Footnote:
The English-born cartographer John Cary (1754-1835) served as an apprentice engraver in London until 1783. At that time, along with the help of his brother William (1760-1825), he went into business for himself in The Strand, No. 181. He gained quick recognition for his ability to design thorough maps and globes. His 1787 work, The New and Correct English Atlas, became the standard for English maps.
