A Chippendale Mahogany Slant-Front Desk
ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN GODDARD (1724-1785), NEWPORT, RI
the fall front writing surface opening to a fitted interior centered with a shell-carved prospect door flanked by pigeonholes with carved valance drawers and a series of two convex drawers, two shell-carved drawers and four concave drawers, the case fitted with four graduated long drawers, raised on ogee bracket feet.

A nearly identical slant-front desk signed Made by / John Goddard / in Newport Rhode Isle appears in the Rhode Island Furniture Archive at Yale University Art Gallery. That desk was purchased at Christie's New York, January 21, 2006, lot 680.
