JOSLIN, Gilman
Loring's Terrestrial Globe containing all the Late Discoveries and Geographical Improvements, also with the Tracks of the most celebrated Circumnavigators. Boston: Gilman Joslin, 1854.12-inch globe, diameter of sphere: cm; covered with 12 copper-engraved globe gores. Brass meridian circle with pointer set in a woodin horizon ring with engraved paper surface containing: degrees of amplitude and azimuth, compass directions, days and months of the year, and the signs of the zodiac. The sphere, meridian and horizon are within an original maple four-leg Joslin full wood stand. (Some very light chipping at the poles, some light chipping with loss to the meridian)Gilman Joslin was one of the most prolific globe-makers of the 19th century. After starting his career as a wood turner, he worked producing globes under Josiah Loring's direction. He acquired the business in 1839, and made globes under Loring's name, and later under his own name. The globe shows the voyages traveled by famous navigators, including Cook, La Perouse, and Vancouver.
