Title-page with engraved vignette, 51 hand-colored engraved double-page maps, 8 letterpress tables (2 hand-colored), and 2 engraved plates. Contemporary red half morocco, smooth spine gilt, uncut (some overall light wear). FIRST EDITION of Buchon's version of Carey and Lea's American Atlas, first published in 1822. The atlas includes 34 maps of North America, including maps of individual states and Washington, D.C., and 17 maps of Central and South America and the West Indies. Phillips Atlases 1176.
