Lot Description
An Egyptian Faience Syncretistic Deity
Late Period, 26th-30th Dynasty, 664-343 B.C.
Height 2 1/2 inches (6 cm).
Property from a Midwest Private Collection
Provenance:
Bonhams, London, Antiquities, 21 April 2005, Lot 104.
Note:
This rare amuletic figure is a syncretistic union of the gods Khnum, Pataikos, and Horus. The hybrid form shows a ram head topped by a sun-disc with the body of a winged dwarf. It is thought these monstrous amulets served an apotropaic function.
For a similar amulet a the British Museum (Inv. no. EA36453), see C. Andrews, Amulets of Ancient Egypt, British Museum Press, 1994, p. 37, ill. 33c.
