Archaeological specimens carved from limestone have been found between Niagara and London, Ontario, and also in the Grand River area.  These limestone pipes, although not figural, have dated between 1630 and 1650.  Catlinite examples found in this region predominate after 1650.  This pipe may have originated west of this area, closer to the Great Lakes region.  The combination of human effigy, animal manitou, and stepped fin all developed amongst the Algonquin tribes of the Great Lakes.
