Lot Description
[FORE-EDGE PAINTING]. BYRON, George Gordon Noel, Lord (1788-1824). The Giaour: A Fragment of a Turkish Tale. --The Bride of Abydos. --The Corsair. --Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte. London: John Murray, 1813, 1814, 1814, 1814.

8vo (8 1/4 x 5 1/4 in). Citron straight-grained morocco gilt, edges gilt concealing a fore-edge painting of the Hellispont (some light rubbing); brown cloth slipcase.

FIRST EDITION of the Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte, "very rare, in any condition--the half-title is usually lacking" (Randolph, p.40), later editions of the other works. "Of all the pamphlet-poems published by John Murray in octavo size the Ode to Napoleon is by far the rarest" (Wise Byron I, pp.98-99).
