Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. BRADY, Mathew, photographer. CDV of Union General William Hays. New York: E & H.T. Anthony, ca 1860s.
2 1/8 x 3 1/4 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (light spotting and stray marks to image, with miniscule bit of paper loss to upper edge, and some wear to mount edges and corners). Anthony's imprint on verso with Brady negative credit. Verso also with various pencil inscriptions including identification of subject "Genl Hays." Provenance: From the personal collection of John B. Batchelder (verso inscription).
Hays was a Virginia-born pre-war regular who served as an artilleryman and later as a brigade commander in the 2nd Corps when he was captured at Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg, Hays took temporary command of the II Corps after both generals Hancock and Gibbon were wounded.
