Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 27 CDVs of Union soldiers, many identified subjects from the 144th New York Infantry.
Twelve approx. 2 1/8 x 3 1/2 in. albumen CDVs on cardstock mounts of soldiers from Companies B and C, 144th New York Infantry (some spotting, occasional fading). Nine with pencil inscription to verso: "From the album of Albert McPherson, Bloomville, Del. Co., NY, NY 144 Inf. Co. C." Four with photographers' imprints to versos: New York: M.P. Kimball; [New York]: Winslow (with blue 2 cent revenue stamp); Walton, NY: Norman Taylor, 11 Nov. 1864 (dated in ink on red 2 cent revenue stamp); New York: R.A. Lewis.
Four of the subjects are identified:
Franklin T. Hine (b. ca 1830) enlisted on 13 August 1862 as a sergeant and mustered into Co. C of the 144th New York on 27 September 1862. He was promoted several times, reaching the rank of 1st lieutenant by 18 November 1864. He was wounded severely, requiring a leg amputation, at Honey Hill, SC on 30 November 1864, and would succumb to his wounds on 20 December the same year.
Josiah D. Smith (b. ca 1844) enlisted on 28 August 1862, mustered into Co. C on 5 January 1863, and mustered out on 25 June 1865 at Hilton Head, SC. The mount verso of his carte is signed.
Edward Hoyt (b. ca 1827) enlisted on 22 August 1862 and was mustered into Co. B on 27 September 1862. He was wounded at Deveaux's Neck, SC on 9 December 1864 and was discharged for disability on 28 April 1865 at David's Island, NY Harbor.
Henry Loomis is identified as the subject of one CDV, however, no man by that name is listed in the roster of the 144th (as noted on the verso pencil inscription).

Cooley (mount trimmed to edges); Delhi, NY: Val Kleeck's Photograph Gallery; Lancaster, PA: Thomas Cummings, 23 October 1865 (Dated in ink on red 2 cent revenue stamp); Little Falls, NY: J.L. Griffin; New York & Washington: Brady; Paterson, NJ: Grotecloss, April 1892 (Late Indian Wars, figure served in the Co. C of the 1st Infantry); Quincy, IL: Mrs. W.A. Reed.
Five subjects are identified:
Sykes N. Donaldson (b. ca 1840) enlisted on 2 October 1861 at Staten Island, NY and mustered into Co. E of the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery on 2 October 1861. He mustered out on 1 October 1864 at Petersburg, VA. Washington DC: R.W. Addis, n.d. Period ink inscription to verso identifies the subject.
Daniel K. Reed enlisted on 2 November 1862 as a sergeant and was mustered into Co. G of the 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry on the same day. He was mustered out on 18 August 1863 at Harrisburg, PA. Signed with a lengthy dedication to his sister on 30 April 1863 by Reed.
Samuel Hiram Reed (b. ca 1830) enlisted on 3 September 1863 as a private at Norwich, NY and mustered into Co. L of the 20th New York Cavalry, mustering out on 31 July 1864 at Manchester, VA. Later pencil inscription to verso identifies the subject.
Angerome Dougherty (b. ca 1837) enlisted as a private at Walton, NY on 10 August 1861. He was mustered into Co. E of the 3rd New York Cavalry on 22 August 1861. He re-enlisted on 16 December 1863 and later transferred into Co. H of the 1st NY Mounted Rifles on 21 July 1865. He was promoted twice, first to corporal on 1 February 1865, and then to sergeant on 23 March 1865, before being transferred again into Co. H of the 4th NY Provisional Cavalry on 6 September 1865 before mustering out on 29 November 1864 at City Point, VA. Two copies of the same pose with two separate backmarks: Franklin, NY: N.A. Beers, n.d. (with red 2 cent revenue stamp and later pencil inscription identifying the subject) and Le Roy, NY: Mrs. E.H. Gillett (with red 2-cent revenue stamp).
