Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 26 CDVs, including portraits featuring soldiers from the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. 

The collection is comprised of the following:

A group of 8 CDV portraits of men who served with the 7th Ohio Infantry: vignetted portrait of Llewellyn R. Davis in uniform. Cleveland, OH: William C. North, n.d. Photographer's imprint to recto and signed by Davis to verso. Enlisted on 22 April 1861 as a corporal and mustered in the same day into Co. A of the 7th Ohio. He was promoted several times as high as captain of Co. C in the 7th on 19 February 1864 and to lieutenant colonel on 2 March 1864 of the 187th Ohio Infantry. He was captured as a POW on 25 May 1864 at Dallas, GA and confined at Columbia, SC. He was paroled on 9 December 1864 at Camp Asylum, Columbia, SC. Mustered out on 20 January 1866 at Macon, GA.

Three-quarters standing portrait of Erastus Barnard Tyler (1822-1891) in uniform. New York and Washington DC: Brady, n.d. Enlisted on 25 April 1861 as a colonel, commissioned into Field & Staff of the 7th Ohio on the same day. Promoted to brigadier general and transferred to the US Volunteers General Staff on 20 May 1862 and was brevetted to major general on 13 March 1864. Mustered out on 24 August 1865.

Vignetted portrait of Orrin J. Crane in uniform. Cleveland, OH: J.M. Greene, n.d. Enlisted on 19 April 1861 as a first lieutenant and commissioned into Co. A of the 7th Ohio on the same day. Promoted extensively up to lieutenant colonel on 2 March 1863 but was killed in action at Ringgold, GA on 27 November 1863.

Three-quarters standing portrait of William R. Creighton in uniform. Cleveland, OH: J.F. Ryder, n.d. Creighton enlisted on 19 April 1861 as a captain and mustered into Co. A of the 7th Ohio the same day. promoted up to colonel (20 May 1862). Killed in action at Ringgold, GA on 27 November 1863.

Vignetted portrait of James W. Cheney in uniform. Red 2-cent revenue stamp to verso. Cheney enlisted on 20 June 1861 as a private and mustered into Co. C of the 7th Ohio, he was promoted to 1st lieutenant on 30 December 1861 and transferred to the 49th Illinois Infantry. He was promoted again to captain on 13 February 1862 before mustering out on 22 March 1865.

Full standing portrait of James W. Cheney in uniform. St. Louis, MO: J.A. Scholten, n.d. Enlisted as a private on 20 June 1861, mustered in the same day into Co. C of the 7th Ohio Infantry. Promoted on 20 December 1861 and transferred and commissioned into Co. D of the 49th Illinois Infantry as a first lieutenant ten days later. He was promoted again to captain on 13 February 1862. Mustered out on 22 March 1865. Here he is posed wearing a sash, holding a sword, and his slouch hat on a decorative pillar.

Vignetted portrait of Charles E. Tibbets in civilian dress. Oberlin, OH: Platt & Hawley, n.d. Tibbetts enlisted as private on 25 April 1861 and mustered into Co. C of the 7th OH on the same day. Mustered out on 18 August 1861.

Vignetted portrait of Elias W. Morey. Cleveland, OH: J.F. Ryder, n.d. Green 3-cent revenue stamp to verso. Morey enlisted on 25 April 1861 as a private and mustered into Co. C of the 7th Ohio on the same day. He was promoted to sergeant (20 June 1861) and to first lieutenant (30 October 1863) and transferred to the 9th USCT Infantry where he was promoted yet again to captain on 18 March 1865. -- Together, 8 CDV portraits of soldiers and officers who served with the 7 Ohio Infantry, condition generally good.

He succumbed to disease on 2 March 1862 at Camp Chase, Paw Paw, VA. -- Vignetted portrait of George W. Pease in civilian clothing and spectacles. Columbus, OH: Witt, n.d. Enlisted on 31 March 1865 as an assistant surgeon, commissioned into Field & Staff of the 197th Ohio Infantry on 12 April 1865. Mustered out on 31 July 1865 at Camp Bradford in Baltimore, MD. -- Vignetted portrait of Braxton Bragg after engraving. Nashville, TN: J. Fletch. Woodward, n.d.
