Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. BRADY, Mathew (1822-1896), photographer. Albumen photograph of Headquarters of General Morell's Brigade, Minor's Hill, Virginia. Washington, DC: M. Brady, 1861.
14 1/8 x 9 1/4 in. albumen photograph on 18 x 13 3/4 in. mount (minor toning; spotting to mount). "Brady's Incidents of the War" series title printed caption with photograph title and copyright statement.
General George W. Morell (1815-1883) stands near the center with five other Union officers and a lady wearing a striped dress, hat, and finely trimmed shawl. Morell wears a forage cap and points with one hand. Artillery pieces and several soldiers stand behind them alongside a headquarter building and signal tower with a soldier posted to the middle platform.
Minor's Hill was a hotly contested area during the Civil War, the Minor family themselves were secessionists. The Union took early control and after the September 1862 loss at Bull Run they set up seven large encampments and fortifications on Minor's Hill, including the tall observation tower seen here.
