Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. HAAS & PEALE, photographers. No. 41. One Piece - Henry's Battery. Morris Island & Hilton Head, South Carolina.

4 1/4 x 7 7/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount. Photographers' imprint and title printed on mount recto. The scene captures an artillery battery with commanding officer Captain Guy Henry seated on horseback. African American artillerists can be seen posed near the cannon. 

Captain Guy V. Henry graduated from West Point in 1861 and commanded Battery B, 1st US Artillery (Henry's Battery), which was engaged in siege operations against Fort Wagner and Battery Gregg in South Carolina. He later received the Medal of Honor for gallantry at the battle of Cold Harbor.
