Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Sixth plate daguerreotype of Union Naval Officer Aaron Ward Weaver. Ca 1850s.
Sixth plate daguerreotype. (Tarnishing and some spotting to perimeter.) Housed in full book-style gilt leather and lacquer case with mother-of-pearl inlay and hand-painting [similar to Berg 6-247, 6-356] (some mother-of-pearl loss, light wear to extremities). With typed label detailing service in Navy.
Aaron Ward Weaver (1832-1919) had a storied naval career, serving for 73 years. He was appointed midshipman in 1848 and graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1854. He served with distinction in the Federal Navy during the Civil War particularly on campaigns in the lower Mississippi (1862-1864) and in the South Atlantic blockade (1864-1865). He retired in 1893 having attained the rank of rear admiral.
