Ninth plate hand-tinted ruby ambrotype. (Some tarnishing to perimeter, some lost of contrast, probably a period copy image.) Housed in gilt pressed paper case (hinge split, minor wear to extremities). 

A bust-length portrait of Davis, his cheeks delicately tinted pink. Possibly produced as a campaign image.
