Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Bible identified to CSA Private W.J. Bruce, 7th TN Infantry, found at the Battle of Resaca by Union Private J.A. Richmond, 103rd OH Infantry.
The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and the New Translated out of the Original Tongues; and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. Portland (ME): Sanborn & Carter, 1844. Miniature volume, approx. 2.5 x 4 in., leather covers with marbled endpapers, gilt page edges, O.T. 852pp; N.T. 259pp. (hand-stitched repairs to spine where leather split).
First fep with gift inscription to original owner: "Memphis, Tenn. Presented to W.J. Bruce by his wife E.M. Bruce. May our Heavenly father be with you and permit us to meet again in safety is my prayer." This sounds as if she gave it to him as he was leaving for war. The next free page has a note from the finder: "This bible was picked up on the battle field of Resaca May 14th 1864 by J.A. Richmond, Co. D, 103rd O.I. [Ohio Infantry], 2nd brigade, 3rd Division, 23rd Army Corps." And the next free page has gift inscription from Richmond to his sister: "Presented to Emma Richmond by her brother James, Altona, Georgia, June 4th, 1864."
[With:] ALS, n.p., July 23rd, 1863? To "Mary" from James Richmond. With patriotic cover. We do find a Richmond family in Cleveland / Cuyahoga Co. Ohio with 5 children: Mary, James, Albert, Emma, and Belle. Likely to his sister.
Richmond seems to have survived the war, but he is hard to locate after that.
