Lot Description
[FILLMORE, Millard (1800-1874)]. JACOBS, E., photographer. Stereodaguerreotype housed in Mascher Case. New Orleans, Louisiana: n.d., ca 1854.
Stereodaguerreotype comprised of two ninth plate daguerreotypes. (Some spotting, tarnishing along perimeter). Housed in full leatherette Mascher case (light rubbing to extremities). Jacob's stamp on mat. Mascher's gilt stamp and 1852 patent stamped on stereoviewer.
A formal, and apparently unique portrait of Millard Fillmore. The 13th president wears a dark suit, neat neck stock, and looks directly at the camera. The image was taken in New Orleans by renowned photographer Jacobs, possibly when Fillmore visited the Crescent City in April 1854 after he left the presidential office. His Southern tour was covered in the New Orleans Picayune and Frederick Douglass' Paper, the latter covering the "warm and cordial welcome to New Orleans" the president received in a 12 April 1854 article. Fillmore continued to be involved in politics at the highest level after his presidency. He lost the 1852 Whig nomination to Winfield Scott, but returned to the stage in 1856 as the presidential nominee for the nativist Know Nothing Party. SCARCE, APPARENTLY UNIQUE. Not documented in Seizing the Light.
