Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - STEREOVIEWS]. [KEMPE & GATES, photographers]. A group of 7 stereoviews documenting the effects of the 1865 flood in Rochester, NY in real time. [Rochester]: [ca 1865].

6 3/4 x 3 1/4 in. stereoviews on cardstock mounts. Revenue stamp affixed to each verso. 6 views also bear inscribed image number and one bears Kempe & Gates sticker on verso. All with some soiling and wear to edges and corners.

Notably, 2 images show the same view, looking across the 1857 Main Street bridge toward Buffalo Street. In one view, labelled on verso "No. 2," the building at center is still fully intact, while the view with the photographers' sticker on verso shows that building partially collapsed into the water. Other featured subjects include the second Monroe County Courthouse (No. 4), a streetcar (No. 10), and several labelled storefronts.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
