Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - VIEWERS]. "Pontioscopio" stereographoscope. Manufactured by Carlo Ponti, Venice, Italy. Ca mid19th century.
Ornately carved, collabsible wooden stereographoscope, 22 x 10 x 5 in. (when folded), with magnification lens with 8 in. diameter. Beneath the large lens is a stereoscopic viewer, inscribed on the front “Pontioscopio." With a sliding card holder in the shape of a height adjustable easel (surface wear and few chips to wood, 4 1/2 in. crack in underside of wood base, missing metal piece at right hinge).
An exceptionally rare stereographoscope.
