Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. VAN BUREN, Martin (1782-1862). Secretarial document signed. Washington, DC, 21 June 1839.

1 page, 13 1/2 x 15 5/8 in., creased, with toning to creases and wear to edges and corners. General Land Office seal affixed to lower left. Undersigned by Martin Van Buren, Jr.  (1812-1855) as his father's Secretary, and Joseph S. Wilson of the General Land Office (d. 1874).

Document grants land to "John McGilbry, alias John McGilverry" [sic] of the Choctaw Nation, citing the fourteenth article of the 1830 Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek entered by John H. Eaton and John Coffee on behalf of the United States.

The treaty's fourteenth article promises one section of 640 acres of land to each Choctaw Head of Family who chooses to become a US citizen, with further acreage to be obtained for each child living with him. John McGilbry is here granted a total of nearly 2,000 acres.
