Lot Description
HARRISON, William Henry. A Discourse on the Aboriginies of the Valley of the Ohio. Cincinniati: The Office of the Cincinnati Express, 1838.
8vo, 51pp with folding map of Miami Fort earthworks on Harrison family land (today in Shawnee Lookout State Park). Printed wraps (fading of wraps). Gift inscription from J. Burnet on front wrap.
First edition. This was the only published work by Harrison. Before being elected President, Harrison was governor of the Indiana Territory and negotiated a number of treaties with Native Americans – generally not to the benefit of the Indians, which stoked resentment and contributed to early Indian Wars, culminating in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 against the Shawnee. (Howes H-245, Sabin 30571)
[With:]
Second copy of same title in a later printing, Chicago: Fergus Printing Company, 1883. This copy uncut.
