PIERCE, Franklin (1804-1869). Partly-printed document signed ("Franklin Pierce") regarding a letter to Queen Victoria (1819-1901). Washington DC, 11 September 1855. 1 page, 213 x 210 mm, old creases, matted.
A document authorizing and directing "the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to the envelope of a letter addressed to Her Majesty Queen Victoria," noting that it was "(Mr. Buchanan's recall)." From 1853-1856, James Buchanan served as the United States Minister to the United Kingdom focusing much of his attention on trying to convince the British to cede their Central American holdings as well as attempting to acquire Cuba from Spain.
