Lot Description
[THE CHECKERS SPEECH]. NIXON, Richard M. Address of Senator Richard M. Nixon. Los Angeles, CA: 23 September 1952.
Typed copy of speech, 14pp. 8.5 x 14 in. Nixon's use of funds had been called into question, so he decided to give his side of the argument in a televised speech Sept. 23, 1952, just six weeks before the election. At the time he was a Senator (Calif.) and republican candidate for Vice President (on Eisenhower's ticket). He laid out his financial history to show that he was not using political funds for personal gains. He also maintained that he was not keeping any gifts from supporters, other than one - someone sent him a black and white cocker spaniel that his daughters, Tricia and Julie, fell in love with and named "Checkers" - hence the name of the speech. The speech was being transcribed as Nixon delivered it and then circulated to the press that evening. This copy produced by Ward E. McConnell, Official Reporter, Dick Nixon Staff.
[With:] Printed postcard thanking supporters for their confidence in him, on a family photo with Dick and Pat and the two girls.
Provenance: These items were obtained by the consignor, who was an Associate Counsel to President Nixon from 1969 to 1971.
