Lot Description
[RELIGION]. Leaving the Old Home or Going Through the Lion. Illustrated church tent revival banner. [ca 1910s-1920s].
68 1/2 x 34 1/2 in. cotton banner with stenciled and hand-drawn text and illustrations in ink (some scattered spotting, pink stains, toning at fold lines, edge wear).
Illustrating the dangers of sin, a large lion is populated with men engaging in all manner of vice including gambling, drinking, and gun fighting. The result of this lifestyle, it is suggested, is death at the end of a hangman's noose.
Church Revival Banners
The late 19th and early 20th centuries continued the Third Great Awakening and saw the emergence of new Christian movements, such as Pentecostalism, Holiness denominations, and Fundamentalism, alongside a renewed vigor for tent revivals, evangelism, and global missionary work. Traditional denominations experienced challenges, and in some cases schisms, in part due to the response of traditional and fundamental beliefs to theological liberalism and cultural modernism. The hand-painted and printed banners offered as Lots 616-621 reflect the religious fervor and passionate beliefs fomenting in this period of change.
