[BUSINESS & COMMERCE] -- [RHODE ISLAND]. A collection of letters associated with Rhode Island merchants Freeborn Sisson (1767-1848) and Captain John Throop Childs (1790-1866), 1824-1827.
Group of approximately 60 letters comprising business correspondence of Freeborn Sisson and John T. Childs, both merchants from the port town of Warren, RI. Conditions vary but some with heavy toning, dampstaining, and faded ink, overall text typically remains legible, occasional tears, heavy creasing at folds. Vp., 1824-1827.
The bulk of the collection constitutes letters to Sisson & Childs from businessmen, merchants, captains, and notable firms representing New England, New York, and Pennsylvania including in part the following: Bradford Durfee and Isaac H. Borden of the Fall River Irons Works Co.; Dudley Parker, a shipowner from Bucksport, Maine; Crawford Allen, a Providence businessman; Nathaniel and Thomas Wiggins, Jr., of Riverhead, NY; George S. Rathbone of Providence; Humphrey & Everett of Providence; Wheaton & Anthony of Providence; and Cheever & Fales of Philadelphia. A group of 7 letters are from Freeborn Sisson to Captain John Scott of Warren and John T. Childs. Interesting discussion throughout the correspondence of ships and commodities such as rye and rum, along with the state of the markets in various locations, and insight into shipping, shipbuilding, trade, and accounts. A fascinating glimpse into commercial activity based out of a prosperous and notable Rhode Island port city.
