Lot Description
[WESTERN AMERICANA] -- [TRANSPORTATION]. Silverton Railroad silver filigree pass. Santa Fe, NM: S. Spitz, 1892.
2 3/4 x 1 1/2 in. engraved silver filigree railroad pass. (Minor tarnishing, small bend.) Housed in gilt leather envelope (minor scuffing, interior lining somewhat tattered). Pass reads in cutout letters laid on filigree "Rio Grande Southern RR / Silverton RR / Pass / 1892." The central plaque is engraved to J.T. Harahan, numbered 333, and issued by "Otto Mears, Pres't." Verso of pass marked "S.Spitz, Santa Fe." Leather case reads "Compliments of the Rio Grande Southern and Silverton Railroads."
Purportedly crafted from Colorado silver, between 578 and 582 silver filigree passes were made in 1892. This pass was issued to James Theodore Harahan (1841-1912), an American businessman and later president of the Illinois Central Railroad from 1906 to 1911.
