Lot Description
[WESTERN AMERICANA]. Albumen photograph of Tithing House, Salt Lake City. [Ca 1870s].
3 5/8 x 2 1/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (some toning and discoloration spots to image, with spotting to mount). Ink inscription on mount recto beneath image reads, "Tithing House / Salt Lake City." Sign on side of building reads, "Deseret Store."
Located on the southeast corner of South Temple and Main Street (where the Joseph Smith Memorial Building stands today), the Tithing House facilitated the gathering and redistribution of money, goods, and services among the Mormon community according to the needs of its members.
