Lot Description
A group of items identified to Sergeant Major John S. Dollinger, 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, incl. sergeant major chevrons and quarter plate tintype. 

The collection is comprised of: 

2 yellow silk brocade sergeant major chevrons sewn on a blue wool background as typically found on Civil War period chevrons, each approx. 7 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. (each with few small holes in blue wool background, some surface soiling). 

[With:] Quarter plate tintype providing waist-length view of Dollinger in uniform wearing the above chevrons with gilt accents, housed under mat with preserver, but no cover glass, uncased (several horizontal creases in tintype). 

[With:] 1 1/2 in. dia. white medal (drop only) from the “Ex-Soldiers and Sailors National Re Union” held at “Columbus O. July 24, 25, 26, 27, 1883” (surface wear and tarnish to medal). 

[With:] 10 x 6 1/2 in. silk 48-star American parade flag (some holes, frayed edges, tape repair at top right corner). 

[Also with:] Dollinger’s military and pension records from the National Archives and copies of pages from the Ohio Roster and the 1st Ohio regimental history documenting his service.

Dollinger, from Miami County, Ohio, served with the 11th Ohio Infantry for three months in 1861. He then enlisted in the 1st Ohio Cavalry on 10/11/1861 as a private. He was wounded in the foot at the battle of Lovejoy Station, Georgia, on 8/20/1864. Dollinger was promoted to sergeant major on 9/8/1864 and was discharged for disability on 5/26/1865.
