Lot Description
American School, 19th Century
Steamer Ironsides
gouache and pencil on paper
signed Chas. W. Norton Detroit lower right
Sight 12 x 22 1/2 inches.
A hand-written label on the verso details the ship's stats. It was built in 1864 by Cuyahoga Works according to the label, but it was actually either Ira Lafrinier or Quayle & Martin, all operating in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1873, the ship sank as a result of a storm on Lake Michigan.
